Keep Them Green
Find tips below on how to care for your Ryan's Green Design Co. goods.
Succulents
These plants are normally thick in order to retain water, as they are typically found in arid climates or dryer conditions. The word "succulent" comes from the Latin word sucus, meaning juice, or sap. Succulents are often grown as decorative plants because of their striking and unique appearance.
Lighting & Where to Keep Them
Succulents do not require much attention, but they do need the same things to survive as all other plant life: Water and sunlight.
These plants will be at their healthiest with approximately 6 hours of daily sunlight. You can place your succulents anywhere in your home, but it may be more convenient to keep them near a window. Take care not to let your succulents get sunburned by over exposure or too much heat. Be mindful of south facing windows, which generally get the most light in the northern hemisphere.
Watering
They are low maintenance, but they still need water.
Over watering is the number one way people kill succulents. Keep the following in mind when caring for your succulents:
- Succulents thrive when they have soaked roots that are then allowed dry out quickly.
- If you keep the soil wet every day, they will drown and die from too much water.
- Just spraying them lightly with water is not sufficient.
Do not water daily. Give your succulents enough water that the soil gets completely wet, and let it dry out completely before you water it again. It's also helpful to know that succulents go dormant for period during the winter season and do not require as much water during those months.
Is My Succulent Healthy?
If you are concerned that your succulents' lower leaves are beginning to wilt and shrivel, we have good news: This is normal. Succulents behave just live other plants in that regard. However, if the newest or uppermost leaves on your succulent are shriveling, then that is a cause for concern. In that situation we recommend re-evaluating your watering and lighting routine.
